Five pieces of library advice to start the semester
We asked five students and faculty at the University of Oslo for their best library advice for new students. Here are their answers.
"Don't panic"
When you start university there are a lot of new things to get aquainted with.
Here are some useful advice from experienced library users to help new (and not so new) students.

Aksel Braanen Sterri, secretary at Seminaret i vitenskapsteori and former leader of the Student ParliamentGet aquantied with the Library's web-pages. They give you access to a lot of interesting articles about things you knew - or did not know - that you were interested in. The difference between a good and a not so good student is the ability to find information on the web effectively. |
Eirik Brazier, historian and former student at UiORemember that the library is not only a collection of books and periodicals, but that the people who work there can make your studies a whole lot easier. Use the subject librarians when you have questions about your subject; they are knowledgable and have the broad overview that can help you. Don't forget the library's electronic resources - they are goldmines of information. |

Christina Sandhaug, research fellow in English renaissance literatureAsk the knowlegable people there for help, it is amazing what they can do! Take a course in searching, and use the many electronic resources. Literature Online is indispensable for students of literature, and for my research Early English Books Online has been very important. The library is also a very uplifting place to sit and work - a beautiful building and a solemn atmosphere - here work is being done! |
Therese Skagen, Medical LibraryThe Buddy-t-shirts say "Don't panic". But if panic strikes after a few weeks, the library has books about study techniques and how to write papers, course books and dictionaries. The libraries also have courses for your subject and sponsor other academic events; follow us on Facebook and Twitter to get the latest news. |

Ylva Wærenskjold, student at the bachelor programme in Special Needs Education, Faculty of Educational SciencesIt is a well-kept secret that the University library also has fiction. These books can be found on the lower floor (U-level) at the Humanities and Social Sciences Library, both in Norwegian, English and other languages. I hardly ever borrow books from Deichman, the Oslo Public Library, any more. I can find what I want to read here. |
