Access to documents in DUO - UiO’s open research archive

Not all documents in the archive are openly accessible. Here is a summary of various restrictions on documents in DUO, and how to gain access.

How to figure out the access code for a document

Hover the mouse cursor over the text More info, and the the relevant access code will show. Click the text More info for more information about access. This is an example of a thesis with access code A:Example of thesis with access code A.


A: This document is not electronically available, in accordance with the author's wishes

(In Norwegian)

  • You may request access to a printed copy at the relevant library (see list below).

  • Expect a few days waiting time until the document is ready. You will receive a message from the library when the document is ready.

  • The order can be sent by e-mail or delivered to the library.

  • The thesis is printed on demand, and you will be notified when the document is ready.

Patrons affiliated to other libraries than the University of Oslo Library:

  • Your local library may request a copy for you, and will be invoiced according to current rates. The borrowing library should not return the copy, it must be destroyed when the borrower is finished reading the document.

For documents in the collections of

B: Delayed access: Only researchers and students may view the document

  • Access to theses with delayed access can only be given to persons who can prove their status as a student or researcher.
  • Contact the relevant library to apply for access (see list below).
  • Expect a few days waiting time. You will receive a message from the library when the document is ready.
  • The copy is only available for use within the University Library and only during staffed hours. You are not allowed to take the copy home.
  • Deposit your valid student or staff identity card at the circulation desk when reading the document.
  • You can read the theses, but not use it in your own work (quoting, referring, etc.) without the consent of the author. You must contact the author and obtain consent. The library/DUO has no contact information for the author.
  • Theses with delayed access are not sent as interlibrary loans.

For documents in the collections of

C: Restricted: The document is restricted because of a statutory duty of confidentiality

  • Access to the document can only be granted by permission from the author. If you wish to use it in your work, for example by quoting and referring to it, you also need the author’s permission.  It is essential that the confirmation from the author specifies what kind of use is permitted. The library/DUO has no contact information for authors.
  • The author needs to fill out a web form to give the permission: https://nettskjema.no/a/99062. Login with electronic id, i.e. BankID.
  • You will receive a message from the library when the document is ready. Expect a few days waiting time from the time the author completed the form.
  • The copy is only available for use within the University Library and only during staffed hours. You are not allowed to take the copy home.
  • Restricted documents are not sent as interlibrary loans.
  • Please note that you may have to deposit a valid library card at the counter, and / or have to read the material in a designated reading room

D: RESTRICTED: May only be quoted by permission of the author

You are allowed to read the document. However, if you wish to use it in your work, for example by quoting and referring to it, you need the author’s permission. You must contact the author yourself to apply for permission. DUO has no contact information for authors.

When you have obtained permission, you must contact the relevant library to gain access to the document. The copy is only available for use within the University Library and only during staffed hours. You are not allowed to take the copy home. Restricted documents are not sent as interlibrary loans. You will receive a message from the library when the document is ready.
This clause was in use until 2006.

E: RESTRICTED: May only be read by permission of the author
