Using the Library
Lending Rules at the University of Oslo Library
Approved by the Library Board June 2001
- In order to borrow documents a library card is required. The card is obtained
on presentation of official identification. The card may be used at all the
libraries of the University of Oslo. The card is personal and cannot be used
by others. The patron should notify the library or the Student Register of
any changes of address, telephone number, email etc. External users must be
registered as residents of Norway in order to get a library card.
- Borrowing documents from the University Library is free of charge.
- Normally the lending period is 4 weeks. Some special documents may have
a shorter lending period. There may be limited access to old and valuable
books. All of the libraries have collections of one day circulation or library
use only. The patron is responsible for returning the books on due date. Lending
rights will be suspended for patrons receiving the third reminder and only
restored on return of the books or payment of claim.
Shorter lending period at the following libraries:
The Main Library and The Student Library at the Faculty of Law: 3 weeks
The Student Library at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences: 2
weeks
- A document may be renewed if it is not on hold for another patron. Documents
on hold must be picked up within one week.
- The patron is personally responsible for returning the book in the same
condition as when borrowed. Library books are not to be taken abroad.
- Reference works, some of the major literature and journals are for library
use only.
- Special documents and documents published before 1850 are for library use
only.
- Interlibrary Loan:
See Interlibrary
Loan and Price List
for the University Library of Oslo.
- Copies of articles: There are photocopiers at the patrons' disposal. See
also Price List.
- Overdue fine of NOK 20,- is demanded for documents not returned before the
second overdue reminder.
- Loss or damage of documents will be fined. The minimum fine is NOK 700,-.
As soon as the claim is sendt, lending rights are suspended until the claim
is paid. A book that has been paid for is still the property of the library
and should be returned if found after the claim has been paid. The patron
will then be refunded the amount, minus processing costs, NOK 350,- .
- Unpaid claims will be transferred to a collecting agency.
- Violation of these lending rules may lead to loss of lending rights at the
University of Oslo Library.
