Search methods for finding relevant biological literature
The University Library web pages
On the library web pages you will find a presentation of the resources available to students and employees at UiO. You will also find information about using the library, library courses, and reference management.
The most relevant resources for the biosciences can be found at the subject pages:
Printed and electronic books can be found through Oria, which is the library search service for UiO. This service also allows you to search for other material than books, such as journal articles, articles, proceedings, conferences, etc. You can also search for material outside the University of Oslo.
In the search field you may choose from several search options including title, author and subject to locate a book. On the results page simply click on the desired book to obtain further information of the book.
Journals can be located through Oria. If your local library does not have a printed version, or if UiO does not subscribe to an electronic version, you can "Order Photocopy". A printed copy is free of charge for students and employees at UiO. However, if you order a copy of too many pages, the library may choose to send you a loan of the journal issue instead.
To order a photocopy, first sign in by clicking on the link in the top right corner. Choose "University of Oslo" as affiliation and then log on with your UiO user name and password. Make sure to fill in as much information you have on the article. You will get an email when the copy has arrived at your local library (The Science Library) where you can pick it up.
The Databases search service provides access to all databases and journals subscribed to by UiO. You will also find dictionaries, handbooks, encyclopedia and lexica.
Through the databases you have the ability to cross search journal and publishers for specific topics. Some of these databases allows sorting on document type. As an example, in Web of Science you may choose between reviews, articles, meetings, books and abstracts.
Norart is a base with references to articles in Norwegian journals. ATEKST contain references to articles in Norwegian newspapers. You can find these databases in the Databases search.
