Development geography (DEVG4020) - individual reading list - master
Scholarly information retrieval is crucial for the quality of any scholarly work, and independent finding and evaluating scholarly information is a requirement for both the Master's thesis as well as almost any research projects. In this course we will practice scholarly search in some of the most common databases for human geography-related research.
Scholarly information is more complicated search than everyday consumer oriented search, shops are open to Google day and night while scholarly databases are "information silos" that is closed for search engines, or are not especially efficient to search in from outside.
Learning outcomes
After the library course you should:
- have a some basic knowledge of the structure of scholarly information and communication
- know where to find relevant databases
- have basic knowledge about how to search in databases most efficiently
- have some knowledge about how to evaluate relevance and quality of search results
Working methods
We will hand out printed scholarly journals and have "hands-on" exercises related to them as technical training. Then we will focus on the process of finding references for your Master's thesis. We use a "learning-by-doing" approach and try to answer questions together that arise in connection to practical reference work.
