Week 30

Keywords: Workshop: Machine Participation, Improvements to website, Co-organization of Library Carpentry

Summary

This week, project members joined a workshop on “Machine Participation”, about the proliferation of automated technologies and artificial intelligence into our daily lives. There, we presented the project and received feedback on our current activities. Furthermore, we have been working on improving the visual navigation project website, and the co-organization of a library carpentry workshop.

Specific activities, including

  1. Joining The Cultures of Machine Participation workshop, University of Oslo (organized by the Department of Informatics). See Hugo’s draft workshop notes.
  • A number of designers and artists from across Europe attended and presented at this workshop
  • Presentation: Machine Participation & the Visual Navigation Project (Hugo)
  • Questions after the presentation:
    • Could a smaller screen serve similar purposes as the touch table?
    • Do people still browse? Are they interested in it?
    • Possibility to “recognize” 3D objects (machine learning). E.g. show an object to a camera. Let the algorithm detect what the object is and search library materials based on that. The detection can be slightly off, but induce serendipity.
    • Why attach RFID tags only to 3d printed objects? This could be done for any object in the library (though it would make topic browsing possible, plus generate interest in the 3d printer)
    • How to account for serendipity and to prevent that people end up in a “filter bubble”. Connect to theories Foucault.
      • Yaron’s project uses 6 degrees of separation as a connection point between materials
    • The complex issue of disseminating science and science projects, and getting media attention (“royal” involvement helps..)
  • Prepare materials for data processing and visualization library carpentry workshop (Dan Michael, Hugo, Trude, Elin)
  • Prepare description page UiO, registration forms
  • Investigate tools to use for the “visualization” part of the workshop
