Summary

This week, we visited a conference about (information) “searching in a new era” (søking i en ny tid), which was quite inspiring. Furthermore, we attended various meetings, including one about the use of e-resources at UiO, and we started to explore options for a library carpentry workshop we organize.

Specific activities, including

  • Attended "Søking i en ny tid" conference at the National Library of Norway

Presentations:

  • Tools for the library innovator (Kenn Bicknell, Digital Resources Librarian, County Metropolitan Transportation Authority Library & Archive, Los Angeles). “Eight key values that greatly enhance the information-seeking experience of our users”
  • The search for relevance (Kenn Bicknell). How do libraries make the connection between being merely important, and being essential?
Nye nb.no hjelper folk å finne fram.
  • Fra piksler til språklig sammenheng (Lars Johnsen og Arne Martinus Lindstad, Språkbanken). Muligheter for språkanalyse av det digitale nasjonalbiblioteket.

  • Extending the VIRAK paper about Oria queries (Mikaela, Hugo, Dan Michael)

We continued writing the text for our VIRAK paper about the query analysis which we did previously, and explored additional usage data to contextualize our results.

  • Collaboration with Yaron, a Master student who designed a touch table application aiming to stimulate curiosity, in combination with the Science Fiction collection of the Realfagsbiblioteket (Kyrre, Hugo, Dan Michael)
  • This week, Yaron invited 6 test participants for his user study, evaluating his application
  • Afterwards, the application was left in the Science Library and gathered basic statistics on the usage of a “curiosity-stimulating” application

Meetings, including

Link resolver statistics meeting (Hugo, Christine, Heidi, Geir, Tone)

  • In relation to our previous query analysis and e-resources statistics which were presented in the library, we were interested in the degree of UiO library users which access publications via other means than Oria.
  • Therefore, we inspected the link resolver statistics of Alma Analytics, which partially reveals where people come from before they access a digital publication (e.g. Google Scholar, Pubmed).
