Week 05

Keywords: Visit to Bergen, Observations at Realfagsbiblioteket

Bilde: Hugo Huurdeman

In the fifth week of the project, we paid a visit to the Digital Collections department of the University of Bergen, for discussing workflows and possible collaborations. Furthermore, Hugo performed some observations in the Realfagsbibliotek, to gain a better understanding of the interactions of library users and staff, and the use of the digital systems in the library. To gain more insights into actual interactions with current library systems, data from Primo Analytics was analyzed, with a first report being available next week.

Specific Activities

  • Oria statistics analysis
  • Hugo worked on answering the following initial research questions, using Oria data gathered at UiO:
    • “Zero result queries” dataset (contains data about queries in Oria which resulted in zero results)
    • What is the nature of the “zero result” queries performed in Oria? What is the degree of different query types?
    • Why are no results returned for these queries?
    • Of what nature are the queries which return no results? (taking a random sample of queries)

Popular queries in Oria (contains data about 40,000 popular queries in Oria)

  • What are the most popular queries?
  • To what extent are (popular) queries recurring over time?
  • What is the nature of the recurring queries?
  • What “popular” queries return “few” results?
  • What “popular” queries return “too many” results in Oria?
  • By answering these questions, we can suggest improvements to Oria, but also gather requirements for the visual navigation tools developed in our project
  • Initial observations from the analysis show a high degree of queries (both successful and unsuccessful) related to pensum books, and frequent problems with citation searching  and ISBNs.

Library observations

  • Hugo did some initial observations in the library, to gain a better understanding of the interactions between students and librarians, and the potential issues occurring on a day-to-day basis. These may suggest improvements that we can tackle with the visual navigation project. The initial observations of this week will be extended with further observations in the informatics and medical libraries in the next week.
