Week 14

Keywords: analysis of previous surveys, analysis of new studies, presentation of project

Summary

This week featured some analysis of previous surveys done in the library, and how they correspond or differ from our own user studies so far. This suggested overlapping issues, such as the importance of the library as a physical place to study, and the loyalty of the students (i.e. many returning visits). Furthermore, we presented our work in the context of various smaller meetings (e.g. with the bibsys working group) and larger meetings (e.g. the university-wide Alma/Oria information meeting). This resulted in valuable new input and ideas for the project.

Specific activities

  • Getting an overview of previous surveys conducted by different library teams in the Science Library, and deriving learned lessons:
    • Library is important as a place to study (as also observed earlier in interviews)
    • Sitting & reading alone or together with fellow students
    • Group work

Also for:

  • Printing, PC use
  • Attending events (esp. Realfagsbibliotek)

Generally happy users in Realfagsbibliotek

  • Good ‘miljø’ for studying, many returning visitors
  • For working alone many students prefer silence, for group work the possibility to talk

Some recurring physical space issues, e.g.

  • Can be hard to find an empty space or available group room
  • Lack of power outlets in certain spaces
  • Not everyone knows or uses Oria (only approx. 50-70% of the users in the different surveys). Some persons knowing it indicate issues in using it (e.g. not able to find what they need, lack of overview).

For the touch table, a new computer was ordered. Hence, we installed a new computer in the touch table (Kyrre, Hugo, 09.12.2016)

  • Positive result: touch table is more responsive
