FAQ

X-port

What is X-port?

A portal providing access to all electronic databases and journals offered by The Oslo University Library (UBO). Many of these e-resources can be searched via X-port and it is also possible to search several databases simultaneously. Along with the SFX services X-port provides seamless access to all of UBOs e-resources.

Examples of resources in the portal:

Bibsys - union catalogue for Norwegian ...
Databases
E-journals
Subject Gateways
E-books
Dictionaries
Encyclopedia

How can I use X-port?

Get an overview of databases by subject categories or alphabetical list.
Find links to the databases.
Browse/search electronic databases, directly via the portal and also several databases simultaneously.
Direct access to fulltext articles if available.
Find e-journals.

Who can use X-port?

Everyone can use X-port. However, how much access you have will depend on who you are and where you are accessing the portal from. Employees and students at The Oslo University can access and use the portal from campus and also from elsewhere. If you are situated outside campus you must log on the University data network to gain access to databases and e-journals. See access portal at the .... . By logging in to X-port you also get access to "My space" functionality in the portal.

Visitors to the library may use X-port at the local computer terminals in the library. These provide access to databases and e-journals which the library subscribes to. Visitors can also use X-port from outside campus but only free journals and databases, will be available in fulltext.

Employees at Rikshospitalet have access to all resources related to medicine and health when logged in to the RH-network.

Internet browser - which one should I use?

Internet Explorer version 6 or later is recommended.

Having trouble logging in - what do I do?

Use your UiO username/password to log in to X-port itself. If you are denied access the most likely cause is either:

that you are not "searchable" via UiOs ***. This problem can be solved by making yourself "searchable, see: *** or
that your password needs to be changed, see:

How to use X-port from outside campus?

UiO users can log in to X-port from any pc, regardless of whether it is connected to the university computer network. However, to access subscription resources, you must also be logged on the network.

Tutorials and demos can be found on the portal information page (lenke her...)

What is SFX?

A link resolver wich provides an overview of all e-journals at UBO. SFX offers services like:

Downloading references to a reference tool like RefMan or Endnote

Reporting errors or submitting comments to the library about the SFX-services

The SFX services are available directly from a range of databases and from X-port. Look for SFX-buttons in the databases. Below is an example of an SFX menu.

Who can use the SFX services?

Everyone. Bur which services you get access to depends on who you are and where you are situated. To get access to all electronic journals you must be logged on to the UiO network so that your work station is assigned the appropriate IP-number (129.240..), see: ***

Why does not SFX link directly to the article?

SFX will take you as close as possible to fulltext. Whether it is possible to link all the way down to article level depends on whether the vendor has made this possible. Sometimes you will be taken straight to the article, somtimes the issue, volume or just to the journal. If SFX does not link directly to the fulltext article or journal you must navigate the vendors site yourself.
