About the workshop

By the end of the workshop, participants should be able to:

1. Describe different purposes of and approaches to systematic reviewing in the social sciences
2. Critique ‘systematic reviewing’ more broadly, as well as critically appraise specific reviews
3. Consider ways of working within a systematic review team
4. Understand the position of systematic reviews in evidence-informed policy, both in terms of possible impact and factors that affect their use
5. Consider the key elements in planning a review and developing a review protocol, with special emphasis on setting the scope of a review

Who should attend

This seminar is aimed at participants working in academic libraries with an special interest in the methodology of systematic reviews in the Social Sciences.

Workshop format

The two-day workshop combines a series of short lectures and exercises, led by staff from EPPI-Centre. Extensive handout materials are provided.

The seminar language is English, and participants will be expected to actively participate in  discussions.

The workshop will address the following topics:

• What are systematic approaches to reviewing? (Definitions, different types of review, stages of a review)
• Setting the scope of a review (research questions, inclusion/exclusion criteria)
• Designing a systematic review (planning issues)
• Developing a review protocol
• Critically appraising a systematic review
• The perception, use, and impact of systematic reviews by end users, including contribution to evidence-informed policy
• Challenges and critiques of systematic reviews
• Variation in reviews across subject fields
• Different skills needed for conducting a systematic review (with an emphasis on the information specialist’s role and organising a team)

Registation is now longer possible.

We have reached the maxium number of participants.  

Workshop fee is 1500 NOK. The fee includes handouts, training material, lunches and coffee breaks for both workshop days, and dinner Wednesday 5th of June. Participants are responsible for their own accommodation and transportation.

Cancellation Policy

No refunds will be made for cancellations, but registered participants are allowed to give their spot to someone else.
