Summary

This week, we carried out an initial usability test of Emnesøk, the system which allows users to search for subjects using a number of subject vocabularies in use at UiO. This led to a number of potential feature enhancements, which we will address in the coming period. Furthermore, we discussed social media strategies at UiO and for the Visual Navigation Project.

Specific activities, including

  1. Updating Visual Navigation Project website (21.03.17)
  2. Refining previous news posts, explorative studies posts, updating project description (e.g., adding links to work so far for each stream)
  3. Usability analysis of Emnesøk (Hugo, 23/24.03.17)
    1. Performing an extensive step-by-step analysis of the interface of Emnesøk (text, buttons, “flow”, functionality)
  4. Creating list of issues, basic improvement suggestions
  5. Taking into account different usability principles, leading to a list of feature enhancements ordered by priority
  6. Incorporating existing usability recommendations:

    1. Shneiderman's "Eight Golden Rules of Interface Design"
    2. Nielsen’s usability heuristics
    3. Wilson’s Search User Interface Design recommendations

Creating personas representing potential use of Emnesøk

  1. Ongoing; involves talking to subject experts
  2. To be tested after initial redesign Emnesøk
  3. Discussing Vortex issues (UiO’s content management system) and social media strategies UiO / Realfagsbiblioteket (Trude, Hugo, 24.03.17)
    1. Science Library’s Facebook strategy

  7. What works well (e.g. tweets specific outcomes of a study, “did you know”, facts, engaging in conversations, conference talk tweeting) & what works less well (e.g. linking to external source, event info)
    1. Discussing Vortex issues
  8. Adding image carrousel on visual navigation project homepage (see Vortex help pages)
  9. Image alignment issues (due to scaling content to different screen sizes, from mobile to large screen)
  10. Policies for image sizes, can also be found in Vortex help pages
  11. Contacting visualization experts NCSU Libraries (US) for potential visit and presentation during VIRAK workshop
    1. See: http://www.lib.ncsu.edu/do/visualization
  12. Discussing progress and designs MA project (Yaron, Hugo, 24.03.17)
