  The University of Oslo Library provides various guidance services, including literature searching, referencing, and academic writing support. Many students struggle to understand and use these services. They are often unaware of them, not expecting that the library offers that kind of assistance. The primary goal of our project was to design a guidance service that is accessible, easily understandable, and tailored to the students’ needs. In this project we have used User Experience (UX) methods. UX methods are a range of techniques used to understand user behavior, needs, and preferences to improve the design and usability of products and services. Our approach incorporated both qualitative and quantitative methods, including guerrilla testing, semi-structured interviews, prototyping, surveys, usability testing, and idea generation. Throughout the process, we actively engaged both students and guidance providers, focusing on creating user-friendly services. We explored user needs, tested alternative forms of guidance, and implemented a new system for booking guidance sessions. Developing new websites has also been a part of the project. Our findings underscore the importance of engaging with students and involving them in the development and design of library services. Their unique perspectives are invaluable for our decision-making processes, and for gaining a deeper understanding of their needs. This project has made it clear that library services must be easily accessible, highly visible, and approachable. Currently, many students find it challenging to seek help, and it is therefore essential that these services are recommended to them by someone they deem trustworthy and credible.

  In June 2008, I completed a Bachelors thesis on the financing of Norwegian open access journals (OA journals) in partial fulfillment of the requirements for a Bachelors degree in Library and Information Sciences at the Oslo University College. This article will present the main results of my findings.

  Universitetsbiblioteket i Oslo tilbyr ei rekke rettleiingstenester, blant anna innan litteratursøk, referering og akademisk skriving. Det har vist seg at mange studentar synes det er vanskeleg å finne fram til og forstå tenestene. Mange kjenner ikkje tilbodet, og dei forventar heller ikkje at biblioteket tilbyr denne type hjelp og støtte. For å kunne tilby eit heilskapleg tilbod som studentane kjenner til, forstår, og som møter deira behov, har det vore naudsynt med ein gjennomgang av rettleiingstenestene. I dette arbeidet har vi brukt Innovasjonshåndboka, som har hjelpt oss å ta i bruk verktøy og metodar for å involvere studentane, og å fokusere på å utforske ulike moglegheiter. Innovasjonshåndboka er eit resultat av erfaringar frå Stimulabprosjektet "Sømløse tjenester", eit samarbeid mellom Universitetsbiblioteka ved NTNU, UiO og UiT, med prosjektstøtte frå Netlife og Nudgelab, og er ei handbok i å skape endring der du er, på brukarane sine premiss. Vi starta med å sette oss eit mål om å tilby ei rettleiingsteneste studentane har behov for, forstår og finn fram til. Deretter har vi utforska ulike moglegheiter og laga prototypar som vi eksperimenterte med. Undervegs har vi involvert både studentar og dei som gjev rettleiing, og vore merksame på å gjere tenestene brukarvenlege i begge ender. Vi har undersøkt brukarbehov, testa ut alternative former for rettleiing og tatt i bruk eit nytt system for bestilling av rettleiing. Utvikling av nye nettsider er også ein del av dette arbeidet.
