  This paper presents a project on introducing into the teaching of Ancient Greek and Latin, ideas, methods and techniques which are largely used in foreign language teaching and are based on research in the fields of Second Language Acquisition and Language Pedagogy. The project is a collaboration between scholars of Ancient Greek and Latin language pedagogy (University of Pisa, University of Oslo) and high school teachers and consists of two subprojects implemented at the Liceo Classico Arnaldo (Brescia, Italy). The first subproject is a series of extracurricular Latin reading labs, aiming at introducing and promoting extensive reading practice. The second subproject is an experimental class where students are taught Ancient Greek and Latin through a communicative approach.

  The chapter offers a survey of new technologies that are used – or have a potential for being used – in the learning and teaching of Ancient Greek and Latin. The presentation and discussion of tools and practices will be framed within the broader context of the literature on the use of technology in Classics teaching and will be informed by the findings of Language Pedagogy and Second Language Acquisition (SLA) research, taking into account different theoretical and methodological approaches to language learning and teaching. Technologies, tools and digital resources will, thus, be linked to specific aspects of the process of language learning/teaching that they can be beneficial for.

  DAMOS is a (MariaDB) relational database, which contains all the published Mycenaean documents. These are administrative documents which constitute the earliest attestation (ca. 1400-1150 BCE) of the Ancient Greek language. The data in DAMOS can be accessed, searched and browsed online since the launch of its online interface in 2013. In this paper, after a general introduction on the data and the database structure, we describe the export function which we recently added to DAMOS and its online interface. This allows users to export data from the database as Epidoc-TEI compliant XML files. EpiDoc is an international, standard subset of TEI, used for the digital edition of documentary Ancient Greek and Latin texts, currently expanding to other epigraphic traditions (e.g., runes, ogham). The present work builds also on the collaboration with the EpiDoc community on the adaptation of EpiDoc to suitably represent the Mycenaean documents. The aim of the EpiDoc export function is, thus, in compliance with the FAIR data principles, to increase the integration of the Mycenaean data with other similar datasets, to provide a sustainable format for the long time archiving of the DAMOS data, and to make it easier to reuse these data. Finally, we briefly discuss the planned development of an import function, which would enable users to contribute data to DAMOS by uploading EpiDoc-XML files with new or revised versions of the Mycenaean texts, thus allowing, and fostering, collaborative work on the digital edition of the Mycenaean documents.

  DAMOS is an electronic database containing all the published Mycenaean texts, together with rich metadata and epigraphic and linguistic annotation. It was born as a tool to allow for a corpus linguistic study of the case system and the expression of case functions and grammatical relations in Mycenaean, a question central in Mycenaean linguistics with implications for the general history of the Greek language. During the work with the creation of the database, though, it quickly became clear that it could, if made available online and developed in the right direction, become a more broadly useful and versatile instrument for scholars (specialists and not) and teachers, and for dissemination in general. This has, thus, become the idea that informs the work with DAMOS. The main objectives of DAMOS can be summarized as follows: - offer online, and freely accessible, a constantly updated version of the Linear B texts - offer a fexible tool for the palaeographic and linguistic analysis of Mycenaean (for the present author, with a special focus on its case system) - facilitate the access to the Mycenaean material for non-specialists by creating different “entry points” (translations, maps, etc.) to the world of the Linear B documents. - contribute to better integrate Mycenaean scholarship within the rest of classical scholarship, not least by the inclution of Mycenaean data into major digital resources in the feld.

  This article describes DĀMOS (Database of Mycenaean at Oslo), the first annotated corpus of all published documents in Mycenaean Greek, the oldest attestation (ca. 1450-1150 BCE) of a Greek dialect and the second oldest of an Indo-European language. Mycenaean is fragmentarily attested through ca. 5900 administrative documents written in an own syllabic script. The particular characteristics of the documentation pose important technical and methodological questions regarding acquisition, structuring, storing and annotation of the data. Both problems and solutions presented here can hopefully be of interest for future work with other similarly fragmentary documentation, be it Greek, Latin, or other ancient languages.

  The ENCODE open online course ‘Digital tools for the research and study of ancient writing cultures’ is designed to introduce teaching staff, GLAM professionals, and graduates to ancient writing cultures and digital studies. It consists of four units: Digital Greek-Latin Epigraphy, Digital Papyrology, Multilingual-Multicultural Digital Infrastructures, and How to Create LOD (linked open data). In this course, you will explore the digital transformations in the fields of Greek and Latin epigraphy, papyrology, and other aspects of ancient writing cultures. It offers several excercises to test your competences and knowledge, for instance on producing and sharing digital editions, managing FAIR data, and structuring and contextualizing information. You will also learn how to disseminate open knowledge related to ancient written cultural heritage. By the end of the course, you should be able (with the support of experts) to design a syllabus that effectively delivers digital competencies to trainees in the study of ancient writing cultures.   This paper presents a newly started Erasmus+ project, whose overarching aim is to promote the use of digital methods in the preservation and study ofpre-modern written texts. Traditional disciplines in the humanities like philology, palaeography and epigraphy are increasingly embracing digital change, developing and using new tools and methods to approach their objects of study. However, these innovations require new competences and training both for students and researchers in the rapidly evolving field of Digital Humanities and AI. The ambition of the ENCODE project is to establish a collaborative and shared platform for the teaching and learning of these digital competences. To reach this goal, a partnership has been established between six universities (Bologna, Parma, Würzburg, Leuven, Hamburg, Oslo), that will organize a series of events, conferences and training sessions during the period 2020-2023, which will also be open to participants from institutions outside of the six project partners. The project and the events planned will lead to three main outcomes:1) The surveying of existing competences and practices in the teaching of digital methods applied to the study of pre-modern texts.2) The formulation of a shared definition of digital competencies needed by academic staff and students involved in programmes focusing on written cultural heritage.3) The design and testing of teaching modules,both basic and advanced, paired with guidelines and examples of best practices for their employment at other universities, making the modules customizable and transferable.

  HumSam-biblioteket har en rik og mangfoldig samling eldre materiale. Spesialsamlingene har bokhistorisk og kulturhistorisk verdi og sier noe om både det samfunnet der bøkene ble skrevet og laget, og samfunnet der bøkene endte opp. Disse samlingene er viktige i bibliotekets arbeid med å formidle fag og kulturarv. Vi presenterer her to av våre mest levende spesialsamlinger, som brukes aktivt i forskning, formidling og undervisning ved Universitetet i Oslo. Disse samlingene tiltrekker seg også oppmerksomhet fra internasjonale forskere. En av de store utfordringene ved slike samlinger er manglende ressurser til registrering og digitalisering. En stor del av bibliotekets eldre materialet er fortsatt kun registrert i de gamle kortkatalogene, og vi ser ved digitalisering av papyrussamlingen og den asiatiske samlingen hvilket stort potensiale som ligger her ved økt fokus på tilgjengeliggjøring.

  DAMOS, Database of Mycenaean at Oslo, is a database containing all published Mycenaean texts in transcribed form, based on current standard editions, but updated with any new published joins, readings and findings. Its first aim is thus to offer an online, freely accessible and constantly updated version of the Linear B texts. DAMOS is, further, also a tool for the philological and linguistic analysis of the Mycenaean documents and to this end the texts are provided with detailed epigraphic and linguistic annotation (morphological, syntactic and lexical) and a rich set of metadata. The first online version of DAMOS (https://www2.hf.uio.no/damos/) was launched in 2013 and allows text-browsing and word searches through the entire corpus or a chosen sub-corpus. Links to other web resources containing pictures of the documents are also provided. The new online version of the database, which will be presented in the talk, will offer much bigger search possibilities. A wider range of metadata (including, e.g., find-place, chronology, seal impression and museum inventory) can be used to define a sub-corpus for browsing or word-searches, and word-searches can now be specified for a broad variety of epigraphic features (e.g. uncertainty of reading or presence of restored characters). Finally, this new version of DAMOS also supports searches for co-occurrences of words.

  This paper presents DĀMOS, the first annotated corpus of all the published texts of Mycenaean Geeek, the earliest attested Greek dialect (ca. 1450 - 1150 B.C.). Mycenaen texts are generally administrative documents, written mostly on clay tablets. They have been found within the remains of the Mycenaean palaces both on Crete and mainland Greece. They amount to something less then 6000 documents, but many of them are brief or fragmentary. They are written in Linear B, a syllabic script, not related to the later Greek alphabets, which was first deciphered in 1952, but in scholarly practice they are conventionally transliterated into Latin letters. It is important to remark that although Linear B as a writing system seems to have worked well as a tool for recording and retrieving administrative information, it is not, in fact, a very efficient instrument for rendering the phonetic system of Greek, presenting many inaccuracies and deficiencies in this regard. The language of the documents, the oldest attestated Indo-European language after Hittite and the only attested Greek dialect of the II millennium B.C., presents several archaic and interesting linguistic features and poses some questions crucial for the history of Greek , which, especially because of the mentioned limitations of the content of the documents and the shortcomings of the writing system, are still in need of an appropriate answer. To create the database, text files with current standard editions as starting point – but extensively revised and updated with new findings, new joins and new readings – have been imported into a relational database (Sql). The texts have then been (partly semi-automatically, partly manually) annotated for morphological, syntactic and lexical information for each word, phrase and sentence. A rich set of metadata (hand attribution, find place, chronology, etc.), including detailed epigraphic information on all textual levels (from syllable, to word, line and document level) has also been imported or entered, which is available for searches and can thus be crossed with more strictly linguistic data. An important feature of DĀMOS is that it allows for multiple analyses of a given linguistic unity to be stored and retrieved. Thus, for example, different hypotheses for the meaning or the grammatical value (e.g. case) of a word can be entered and ranged according to different criteria. This feature is, indeed, essential for work with a corpus like the Mycenaean one, where script ambiguities and scanty texts make interpretations often uncertain and dependent on context and intertextual comparison. The linguistic interpretation of a given phenomenon (e.g. the expression of spatial relations in Mycenaean) can, indeed, depend on competing variants of a net of hypotheses (the hypothesized number of cases, the hypothesized phonemic value of certain graphemes, etc.) and implications; it is then crucial to be able to test and compare the different possible linguistic interpretations by varying the value of certain (sets of) analyses in performing complex database queries.   DĀMOS is the first annotated, searchable electronic corpus of all the published Mycenaean texts, providing an innovative tool for the analysis of their language. Text files with current standard editions as starting point, but extensively revised and updated with the many new joins, readings and findings, have been imported into an Sql-database, together with the data conveyed by editing conventions, so that important metadata and epigraphical information relative to the contexts of syllable/syllabogram, word, line and text is available for searches. The texts have then been (partly semi-automatically, partly manually) annotated for morphology and syntax and will subsequently also be provided with a translation and additional lexical information (e.g., the Indo-European root, if reconstructible) for each word. A relevant feature of the database is that it allows for multiple analyses of a given linguistic unity: e.g. different hypotheses for the meaning or the grammatical value of a word can be entered and ranged according to their grade of probability. This feature is essential for work with a corpus like the Mycenaean one, where script deficiencies and scanty texts make interpretations often uncertain and dependent on context and intertextual comparison.
