Course description
Julia is a modern programming language that is designed to be easy to use and having high performance. It is used across different scientific fields and has a wide range of libraries, covering data science/AI, and nearly all natural sciences.
You can think about Julia as something as easy to program as Python but with the speed of C++ or Fortran. This workshop is an introduction to programming with Julia for people with previous programming experience.
Target audience
- Researchers and students that need high-performing code.
- Data scientists wishing to squeeze the last bit of performance.
Learning outcomes
- Understand the pros and cons of Julia.
- Write Julia programmes using the basic building blocks of control flow, interfaces, loops.
- Install Julia packages.
- Make use of multiple dispatch and Julia's type system.
- Benchmark code in Julia.
Prerequisites and required materials
- Previous programming experience. Ideally with Python, but any language will do.
Understand the concepts of files, directories, as well as arrays and indices.
Familiarity with the Unix shell would be a plus, but not necessary. - Laptop.
- A text editor
- A terminal emulator ("shell")
- Install the latest version of Julia
Lunch
- There will be a complementary buffet-lunch at 12:00-13:00 from the Sverdrups spiseri (Georg Sverdrups Hus, 2nd floor).
- After you get your lunch, join us at Store møterom where we have reserved seats for #DSDays25 participants.
Number of participants
After the soft deadline, a waiting list will be automatically handled upon de-registrations.
