Please note!

This workshop takes place over two different days in the same room:

  • Day 1: Tuesday, January 7, from 13:00 to 16:00
  • Day 2: Wednesday, January 8, from 13:00 to 16:00

Target audience

  • This workshop is suitable for both pure mathematics, optimization and Machine Learning/Deep Learning/AI.
  • Students
  • Researchers

Course description

Optimization is a useful tool for many aspects in science and life. This workshop will provide an introduction into this subject.

We will cover both the deterministic case and the stochastic case, the latter being important in training Deep Learning/AI models. Students will be presented with some fundamental algorithms and theoretical results, as well as some good methods to boost performance of the algorithms.

The students will be helped with coding some of these algorithms themselves in Python, and do experiments themselves. They will also be introduced with testing advanced methods in some web apps.

Learning outcomes

  • Why optimization is useful in Machine Learning/Deep Learning/AI.
  • Why optimization is also useful in purely theoretical research.
  • The difference between deterministic and stochastic optimization.
  • Descriptions, pros and cons of some popular and some new optimization algorithms.
  • Python codes of some algorithms.
  • Running on some apps.

Prerequisites and required materials

  • Entry level is for undergraduate students of year 3, and in exceptional cases for undergraduate students of year 2.
  • Multivariable Calculus is the main required knowledge.
  • For the coding part, it is recommended that you have experience with programming in Python. At least, you should know how to run a program in Python (for example in Terminal).
  • Knowing about Dynamical systems and other subjects are helpful but not required.
  • You should bring a Laptop, which can run Python programs.

Lunch

  • There will be a complementary buffet-lunch at 12:00–13:00 from the Sverdrups spiseri (Georg Sverdrups Hus, 2nd floor).
  • After you get your lunch, join us at Store møterom where we have reserved seats for #DSDays25 participants.

Number of participants

After the soft deadline, a waiting list will be automatically handled upon de-registrations.
