Course description
LaTeX Light: Introduction to LyX is meant for everyone looking for alternatives to Microsoft Word, whether student or established academic; everyone who has ever spent hours adapting the bibliography to a different journal’s style or tried to stop the illustrations from completely messing up the formatting of the text.
This introductory course teaches you how to write a structured text of any length – whether 5-page journal article or 15-chapter book – using LyX and compiling it with LaTeX.
While LaTeX and LyX can be used across all disciplines and attendants from any scientific field are welcome, the course is more aimed at scholars from the Humanities than the Natural Sciences.
Target audience
Humanities scholars across disciplines.
Learning outcome
By the end of the course, attendants will:
- Be able to understand and apply the basic principles of “what you get is what you see” versus “what you get is what you want”.
- Use the LyX interface.
- Define basic structures in a LyX document (chapters, sections and subsections).
- Include images and tables in a document.
- Use bibliographies and cross-referencing.
- Output different versions of the same document.
