Please note!

This is a three-part course series held over three afternoons in the same room:

Beginner Level (Part 1): Tuesday, January 6, from 13:00 to 16:00 in GSH, Grupperom 1

Intermediate Level (Part 2): Wednesday, January 7, from 13:00 to 16:00 in GSH, Grupperom 1

Advanced Level (Part 3): Thursday, January 8, from 13:00 to 16:00 in GSH, LINKEN

Participants can choose sessions based on their experience level:

  • Part 1: For beginners with no prior version control experience.
  • Part 2: For intermediate users who can authenticate Git and GitHub but seek to improve workflow efficiency and conflict resolution.
  • Part 3: For advanced users familiar with core Git concepts who wish to master best practices and team workflows.

For beginners, each part serves as a foundation for the next—participants may attend all three parts consecutively, but they have to sign up for each part separately!

Course description

The workshop offers a structured introduction to version control concepts and practical workflows using Git and GitHub. Across three levels, participants will gradually build their understanding—from fundamental concepts to more advanced collaborative techniques.

  1. Beginner Level (Part 1): Introduces the fundamental theory of version control and its key components. Participants will then engage in a guided, hands-on demo project, learning essential Git commands to establish a practical foundation for using Git and GitHub effectively.
  2. Intermediate Level (Part 2): Focuses on collaborative development within a single-branch workflow. Participants will experience common challenges such as merge conflicts and learn strategies to resolve them. The session then expands into branching and merging workflows using Git, emphasizing real-world collaboration techniques.
  3. Advanced Level (Part 3): Explores multi-branch development frameworks and the use of pull requests in collaborative environments. Best practices for efficient and organized version control are discussed, and the workshop concludes with a summary of key do’s and don’ts for maintaining a clean, sustainable project history.
