Course description
This workshop offers an introduction to jamovi, a free and user-friendly platform for statistical analysis, data visualization, and reporting. Designed with accessibility in mind, jamovi provides an intuitive point-and-click interface that resembles SPSS (or Excel), while leveraging the powerful R programming language under the hood. This combination makes it an excellent tool both for newcomers to data analysis and for experienced researchers.
Even though jamovi is straightforward and easy to implement, its integration with R enables it to perform advanced analyses and handle sophisticated data transformations and recoding.
Target audience
Anyone, across disciplines, who is looking for a strong, free, and user-friendly alternative to SPSS for data analysis. Suitable for faculty, researchers, and students in any field that involves data analysis.
Learning outcomes
Participants will gain:
- Practical skills in jamovi’s core functionality, including exploring, transforming, visualizing, and reporting data.
- Practical skills to perform descriptive statistics without coding.
- Practical skills to conduct hypothesis tests like t-tests, ANOVA, and non-parametric tests.
- Ability to create clear and reproducible outputs.
- Understanding of how jamovi integrates with R for more advanced analyses if needed.
Prerequisites
- Beginner level
- No prior experience in statistics or programming is required. The workshop is structured to guide participants step by step.
Technical and Material Requirements
- Laptop.
- Jamovi installed (free download from www.jamovi.org or via UiO Software Center).
- Sample dataset(s) to practice with (sent by email).
Lunch
- There will be a complementary buffet-lunch at 12:00-13:00 from the Sverdrups spiseri (Georg Sverdrups Hus, 2nd floor).
- After you get your lunch, join us at Store møterom where we have reserved seats for #DSDays2026 participants.
