Course description
Fortran has been used since the mind 1950s and still the major language for scientific computing. Easy to learn, simple intuitive syntax, tailored for science, which by the nature of the language prevents many poor programming mistakes because they are not possible. This workshop will focus on vector add numerical operations. Basics with strong typing and vector, matrix syntax as well as loops commonly found in scientific code. While modern Fortran is object oriented, it has less uptake in scientific programming and will only be briefly covered.
Target audience
Scientists that are doing science with numerical computations. Focus on (natural, social, human) sciences. Anyone who have the need to deal with numbers.
Learning outcomes
Learn:
- How the basics of modern Fortran.
- Focus on vector (from low high dimensional) syntax.
- The strong typing.
- How the intuitive nature of language prevents you from many common mistakes often found in C and C++ programs written by none computer scientists.
Prerequisites
- Basic knowledge of scientific programming, arrays, vectors, matrices and high dimensional fields.
- Knowledge of data types.
- Basic entry lever knowledge of programming. Python users should feel comfortable. The Fortran language is easy to learn. After all it's written for scientists with constant modernisation over the last 70 years.
Technical and Material Requirements
- A laptop with Fortran installed, GNU Fortran is a very good option.
Lunch
- There will be a complementary buffet-lunch at 12:00-13:00 from the Sverdrups spiseri (Georg Sverdrups Hus, 2nd floor).
- After you get your lunch, join us at Store møterom where we have reserved seats for #DSDays2026 participants.
Number of participants
