Course description
This workshop introduces participants to mapping and analyzing geospatial data using PyGMT, a Python-based tool for scientific mapping and visualization.
Participants will learn to create geographical maps using different map projections, plot point data using geographic coordinates, visualize NetCDF datasets such as population density and global temperature, and represent vector data such as wind flow velocity and ocean circulation.
The workshop provides practical experience in geospatial data visualization and interpretation, helping participants develop skills to create informative, high-quality maps for scientific research and spatial analysis.
Target audience
Master students
PhD students
Researchers
Staff
Primarily for those who are involved in geoscience research, but the course will be useful for anyone who works with maps and/or geospatial visualization, e.g. geopolitics.
Learning outcomes
- Transferable Skills
- Understand Python and use JupyterLab for data analysis
- Specific Skills
- Develop geospatial mapping and visualization skills using PyGMT
- Visualize and interpret spatial data for scientific research and analysis
Prerequisites
- Having Miniforge (Conda) installed on your system is recommended. The first 15 minutes of the workshop will be dedicated to its installation and setup.
Required materials
- PyGMT installation will be required: https://www.pygmt.org/latest/install.html
- I will try to find an alternative way if we can use binder, in case installation is not working for some participants.
Lunch
- There will be a complementary buffet-lunch at 12:00-13:00 from the Sverdrups spiseri (Georg Sverdrups Hus, 2nd floor).
- After you get your lunch, join us at Store møterom where we have reserved seats for #DSDays2027 participants.
Number of participants
20
