Course description

It is increasingly common to share and reuse research data. Rapidly growing volumes of data are becoming available from numerous repositories, but they often lack metadata and methodological description, and consist of unstructured data collections. This limits data discoverability, interoperability, and reuse.

This workshop introduces practical approaches to managing neuroscience data, with a focus on preparing data for sharing, discovery, and reuse, guided by the FAIR principles (Wilkinson et al., 2016). Using the EBRAINS Research Infrastructure (RRID:SCR_019260) as an example, a repository accepting datasets of a broad range of data related to the brain, we will show participants how to organise and prepare their data for sharing.

We will present the data sharing workflow used in EBRAINS; which includes managing files, documenting methods, preparing metadata and publishing datasets in the EBRAINS Knowledge Graph (RRID:SCR_017612). The workshop will include hands-on sessions allowing participants to experience different workflow steps using example datasets from neuroscience. We also encourage participants to contribute with examples from their own experiences and research. Although the examples are based on the EBRAINS infrastructure and neuroscience data, the workflow and principles presented here can be adapted by research groups across disciplines to develop their own data management and sharing practices.

Target audience

PhD candidates
Postdocs
Researchers
Data managers, engineers, librarians
Those that are interested in data sharing and open science
Relevant scientific fields: neuroscience, biological sciences. The data and tools used in our examples are from neuroscience, but the concepts can be extrapolated to other scientific fields, especially for biological and medical fields.

Learning outcomes

  • Learn the basics of data and metadata management
  • Learn about requirements for sharing FAIR data
  • Prepare your data for AI compatibility
  • Learn about how to share and find data using the EBRAINS Research Infrastructure

Prerequisites

  • Beginner
  • No prior knowledge is required
  • The course targets researchers in all parts of the data life-cycle, researchers interested in learning more about open science and data sharing, and researchers in the process of publishing data.
  • The course can also be beneficial for engineers and data managers seeking to learn more about data-sharing.

Required materials

  • A laptop with an up-to-date web browser (we recommend Edge, Chrome or Firefox) is required for the hands-on examples.
  • Internet access
  • Optional: Bring examples of your own research data if you want to discuss it with the workshop instructors

Lunch

  • There will be a complementary buffet-lunch at 12:00-13:00 from the Sverdrups spiseri (Georg Sverdrups Hus, 2nd floor).
  • After you get your lunch, join us at Store møterom where we have reserved seats for #DSDays2027 participants.
