Course description

In this workshop, we will use QGIS, a free, open-source program, to make maps together.

Target audience

This workshop is open to all students at master level or above and all employees at the UiO, although it is primarily meant for students and researchers in the humanities, social sciences and/or theology.

Learning outcomes

We will cover how to:

  • Understand QGIS’ layout
  • Import data into QGIS
  • Choose how your data is visualized on the map
  • Prepare your map for export to a format suitable for insertion in your presentation or your text

Prerequisites

  • This a beginner course.
  • You do not need prior experience with cartography or QGIS.

Technical and Material Requirements

Please bring your laptop with QGIS installed AND a computer mouse.

1. Install QGIS – this can take time, the program is rather big (1.2GB).

Private laptop: download and install QGIS version 3.40 for your operating system from the QGIS website (free). (Note that this is not the latest version but the latest long-term release)

UiO laptop: install QGIS 3.40 from Software Center

UiO mac laptop: download and install QGIS version 3.40.

I recommend installing the program in English because most of the tutorials online are for the English version.

2. Create a folder for this QGIS course on your computer.

Place in this folder these three files: Dataset for QGIS workshop.

If any of this is unclear, we will be available in the classroom to help you one hour before the start of the workshop. You can also contact alexandre.simon@ub.uio.no  before the workshop.

Number of participants

After the soft deadline, a waiting list will be automatically handled upon de-registrations.
