Course Description
This day-long advanced methods course in text mining methodology will give you a fundamental understanding of what text mining is and an introduction to available text mining tools. You will learn about various methods and see how they have been applied to different cases and corpora. Finally, you will select your own case, defining a corpus to text mine with your choice of tool(s) and methodology.
Course Preparations
You will be expected to complete assigned readings before our in-class meeting December 2. A portion of the assigned reading is for everyone, and one research article will be just for you. In class, you will present this article including its case, text mining methodology, and findings. Prepare a 5-10 minutes presentation.
All readings are availble in a Zotero library. Log in to Zotero or create an account to log in and ask to join this library for access to the PDFs. Also read the notes in the library with reading instructions. When you ask to join the library, please also send me (annesabo) a message in Zotero presenting yourself by your actual name in addition to your Zotero user name.
Assignment
After class, you will define your own corpus to text mine, selecting the tool(s) and methodology you will use to text mine it with. You may receive guidance on the assignment if you wish. You will present your case, methodology, and findings to the other course participants as a conclusion to the assignment.
Assignment steps:
- Identifying your corpus and what you wish to text mine your corpus for.
- Selecting your tool(s) and methodology. Tool guides are linked to from the Zotero library.
- What sort of preprocessing (e.g. HTR or OCR and reformatting) will you need to do of your dataset before you can begin the actual text mining with this tool?
- Text mining the corpus: Allow for trial and error and possibly having to rethink and revise your approach and project.
- Write up a 2-3 page reflection paper summarizing your work, including goals, challenges, preliminary findings, and possible future work on this project.
- Prepare a 5-10 minutes presentation of your project, including case, corpus, methodology, findings, and reflections.
Papers (in Word) and presentations (in PowerPoint or other format) are due at the time of presentations.
The presentations will take place during a mini coference towards the end of the semester (TBD, possible dates are December 14, 15, or 16). Be prepared to give each other feedback and ideas for future work on each other’s projects.

This course will be taught in English. We can also answer questions in Norwegian.
Registration
The course is open to PhD fellows, completion grant holders, and post-doctoral fellows at the Faculty of Humanities, other UiO faculties, and external PhD fellows. Registration opens on October 7 at noon and priority is given to PhDs and postdocs from the Faculty of Humanities. We ask that PhDs and postdocs from other Faculties at UiO, and other applicants, wait until on October 14 to register. Registration closes when the course has reached its maximum number of participants, or on November 13.
