Course description
A hands-on workshop with wearable sensors to demonstrate collecting and handling human cardiac and respiratory measurements in active and interactive conditions. Sensors used are Equivital life monitor vests, with data processing and visualisation in Python.
In connection with other HumanLab series, this workshop will introduce cardiac and respiratory signals, give participants a chance to take some measurements of themselves during a short demonstration sequence, and then work through handling and interpreting these measurements. Key topics include: spotting bad measurements, signal alignment, time series and summary activity features, the impact of active experimental conditions on these systems, and interactions with movement, vocalisation, and social factors.
Participants will work from prepared Python notebooks with respiration and cardiac signal specific libraries to load, clean, and plot these measurements for analysis against experimental conditions.
Target audience
Graduate students and researchers interested in incorporating respiratory and cardiac measurements to other lines of human research. Members of the community interested in data from commercial wearable technologies.
Learning outcomes
- Handle and wear commercial sensor vest to take demo measurements
- Load and plot measurements of cardiac and respiratory activity in python
- Recognise common sensor issues that compromise measurement quality
- Use python libraries to extract signal features relevant to human action and interaction
- Visualise signal information with participant action descriptions to explore timing effects and feature trends
Prerequisites
- This course is meant to be accessible to a Beginner Level with jupyter notebooks and psychophysiology measurement, while featuring Intermediate Level data analysis techniques.
Technical and Material Requirements
- Laptop and access to Google Collab in order to run the data analysis from prepared notebooks.
- There will be demo data available for participants that are not interested in collecting their own measurements during the workshop.
Lunch
- There will be a complementary buffet-lunch at 12:00-13:00 from the Sverdrups spiseri (Georg Sverdrups Hus, 2nd floor).
- After you get your lunch, join us at Store møterom where we have reserved seats for #DSDays2026 participants.
Number of participants
After the soft deadline, a waiting list will be automatically handled upon de-registrations.
