Course description
This course provides students and researchers with a hands-on introduction to eye-tracking, covering what it is, how it works, and its potential research applications.
What is eye-tracking? Eye-tracking captures the position and size of the eye's pupil as individuals explore images or stimuli on a screen or interact with their surroundings. It allows us to study what people are paying attention to (through gaze position) and how hard they are working mentally (through pupil size). Eye-tracking can be seamlessly integrated into applications, enabling hands-free device control through the user's gaze.
What to expect:
- Introduction: The workshop will start with a short introduction to the eye-tracking technologies available at UiO and explore use cases from diverse disciplines.
- Hands-on experience: Workshop participants will have an opportunity to work with our mobile eye-trackers and collect some data.
- Data exploration: We will run through the standard data processing steps and visualization options using one of the open datasets that we will share.
- Discussion and Q&A: We will wrap up with a discussion on the possibilities and challenges of working with eye-tracking.
Target audience
Master students, PhD candidates, researchers from any discipline who are interested in learning about eye-tracking methods with human participants.
Learning outcomes
- Fundamentals of eye-tracking: Understanding basic terminology and techniques for measuring eye movements and pupil size
- Experiment design strategies: Possibilities, challenges, and tips for successful experiments
