Book launch: Affect, Emotion and Sensibility in Modern Japanese Literature

Welcome to the book launch of Reiko Abe Auestad's new monograph "Affect, Emotion and Sensibilityr in Modern Japanese Literature: From Natsume Sôseki to Ishimure Michiko"!

book cover

Drawing on recent research on cognition, the academic monograph "Affect, Emotion and Sensibility in Modern Japanese Literature. From Natsume Sôseki to Ishimure Michiko" focuses on various kinds of entanglements, such as emotional and historical, as represented in a selection of Japanese novels and a film. The studied works are by four well-known male authors (Natsume Sôseki, Shiga Naoya, Ôe Kenzaburô, Ibuse Masuji) and a male director (Imamura Shôhei) and five female authors (Kirino Natsuo, Kawakami Mieko, Murata Sayaka, Tsushima Yûko, and Ishimure Michiko) .

Combining cognitive approaches with more established close-reading methods, the book explores ways in which we (characters as well as the reader) are embedded in intersubjective networks of relational forces often beyond our conscious control.

Reiko is a member of LCE (Literature, Cognition and Emotions) at the Department of Literature, Area Studies and European Languages (IKOS).
