Democracy Lunch: Gender Diversity and Democracy

How did gender diversity become one of the most controversial political issues of our time? And what happens to our democracy when harassment and hate crimes against transgender and non-binary people increase?

History shows us that transphobia is far from a new phenomenon. The dehumanization of people who do not fit into traditional gender categories has a long tradition. Celestine Kunkeler from the Center for Research on Extremism (C-REX) will  discuss what history can teach us about the recognition and persecution of transgender people. As a historian, she has researched the evolution of discourse around transgender people and their rights from the 18th century to today. Kunkeler has also worked extensively to improve the rights of sexual minorities at the University of Oslo (UiO). To what extent are the rights of transgender individuals upheld at UiO?

Speakers:

  • Celestine Kunkeler, postdoctoral fellow at the Center for Research on Extremism (C-REX)
  • Discussion leader: Marte Storbråten Ytterbøe from UiO:Democracy

Lunch will be served from 12:00 PM, and the event will start at 12:15 PM. Open to all!

The Democracy Lunch series is organized in collaboration with the University Library and the Student Parliament, and is supported by the Sparebankstiftelsen.
