DAMOS (Database of Mycenaean at Oslo)
For our first network meeting we have invited academic librarian and BærUt! member Federico Aurora to present his project "DAMOS (Databases of Mycenaean at Oslo)", which contains annotated transcriptions od the oldest preserved ancient Greek texts (ca. 1350-1150BC). Aurora writes the following about the project: "The data is stored in a relational MariaDB database and published on the website https://damos.hf.uio.no/, which has become a standard tool in the field. This project deals with developing the possibility to export and import the data from and to DAMOS in the EpiDoc format. EpiDoc is a subset of the TEI (Text Encoding Initiative) standards for XML encoding of texts and is the standard format for the digital representation of texts in Greek and Latin papyrology and epigraphy. It is also increasingly used in the epigraphy of other languages (Egyptology, Assyriology, runology, etc.). The EpiDoc export/import function aims to: 1) integrate the data from DAMOS into the larger landscape of the Greek and Latin documentary sources by making them available for reuse in other databases in the field; 2) simplify the work with updating the texts in DAMOS on the occasion of new editions and new discoveries: the new import function will provide a much better workflow and at the same time support collaboration with colleagues in the field, as it will be possible for any researcher to create a new version of one or more texts without needing direct access to the DAMOS database. EpiDoc-XML also constitutes a sustainable alternative for the long-term storage of the data in DAMOS."
