About the Services and Platforms

The University Library's digitisation services, including digitisation and cataloguing of collections, is coordinated by the Special Collections and Digitisation Team (SpesDig) at the library.

Background

The original goal for the project “Special Collections and Databases” was to establish a shared platform for the storage, cataloguing and dissemination of special collections, professional archives, locally developed databases, texts or audiovisual materials not included in the library’s catalogues.

The cultural heritage platform Alvin was selected for this purpose.

The University Library was also granted funds to create a digitisation workshop in Georg Sverdrups hus, containing scanners, cameras and equipment for digitising audiovisual material connected to this project, and for establishing a permanent offer of digitisation services to the whole of the university.

Go to the project homepage, where you will find minutes and a final report (in Norwegian).

The Digitisation Workshop in Georg Sverdrups hus

The University Library’s new digitization workshop features top modern digitisation units for gentle conversions of different types of material to digital formats.

What do we digitise?

All types of printed or handwritten material, such as maps, plans, books, manuscripts, letters and photographs are digitised on our two large overhead scanners. These handle formats up to A2 and A1 (with a resolution of up to 1000 dpi). With this equipment we are also able to digitise older, valuable books that cannot be fully opened.

Glass plate slides and negatives, both 35mm, medium and large formats, are digitised with the help of our slide scanners and digital SLR camera.

The digitisation workshop also contains a photo studio for photographing and digitising artefacts and objects.

About Alvin

Alvin is an open, Nordic platform for digital collections and digitised cultural heritage.

The platform is developed and operated by Uppsala University Library and is run as a consortium along with the university libraries of Gothenburg and Lund. Several other cultural heritage institutions are also members of Alvin, and the University of Oslo’s university library is among these.

Explore Alvin here or go directly to a list of all the posts we have published on the platform. Here you can filter records with digitised files that are freely available, by selecting "Free online" under "Refine search result" on the left of the page.
