New Agreement with Elsevier
Earlier this month, Sikt published a news article about the negotiations with Elsevier: Successful negotiations with Elsevier provide significant savings for Norwegian research institutions (openscience.no).
For UiO to enter into a new agreement with Elsevier, it was absolutely necessary that we achieved a significant cost reduction. The expenses for open access publishing are high, and the weak Norwegian krone has increased the pressure on budgets over time.
Despite a relatively good negotiation result with Elsevier, it remains challenging to accommodate the knowledge resources and publishing agreements required by UiO's many academic disciplines and fields.
The agreement with Elsevier is the largest of its kind for UiO and is important across most academic disciplines. The agreement ensures the ability to publish openly in a substantial portfolio of the publisher's journals, in accordance with national and international goals and requirements, and to do so in a simple and predictable manner.
Access to many of the publisher's journals is also included in the agreement. This is a crucial element, as much of the research internationally is still published behind paywalls.
New Agreement with Taylor & Francis
A new agreement with Taylor & Francis is also in place. Employees and students affiliated with UiO and OUS are guaranteed access to and coverage for open publishing in most of the publisher's hybrid journals. During the previous agreement period, there was significant growth in hybrid publishing with Taylor & Francis. To keep the cost of the new agreement at a sustainable level, Sikt's negotiation council, in which UiO is represented, has accepted a quota for hybrid publishing. This quota is of a size that is likely to cover this publishing for both 2025 and 2026.
Publishing in the publisher's gold open access journals is also covered by UiO through the agreement.
New Publish and Read Agreement with Brill
New this year is an agreement that also includes publishing with the publisher Brill. This means that employees and students at UiO and OUS have access to the entire journal portfolio, as well as unlimited publishing in the publisher's gold and hybrid journals. The new agreement with Brill offers a strong addition to the opportunities for open publishing with full cost coverage, primarily within the humanities and social sciences.
Delayed Negotiations with Wiley
As of January 29, no agreement has been reached with Wiley. The information in the December news article remains valid.
