Elsevier

The "Read & publish agreement", which was signed in April 2019, is referred to as a pilot agreement, and Norway is the first country to negotiate such an agreement with Elsevier. The agreement allows for approx. 90% of all articles published in Elsevier journals by authors at Norwegian institutions to be openly available. The agreement includes the following:

  • The APC cost is covered in its entirety by UiO. Open publication does not entail extra costs for the researcher / research group.
  • The corresponding author must be affiliated with UiO. Corresponding author refers to the author who is responsible for submission of the article and follow-up of the same through the journal’s publication process. Some disciplines use the term first author instead of corresponding author.

  • The agreement covers articles submitted in 2019 and 2020.

  • It is important to register correct UiO affiliation as early as possible in the process. See presentation about Elsevier's author journey. (PDF)

  • The articles are published with CC-license, and Elsevier uses CC BY and CC BY-NC-ND. Read more about the licenses on Elsevier's website.
  • Authors who have already published with Elsevier in January throughout April 2019 in an approved journal will be contacted by the publisher in the spring and be offered to make the article open available at no extra cost. If the article is published as a hybrid OA, the researcher / research group will be refunded the publication fee (APC) from Elsevier.
  • Reading access to the entire Science Direct Freedom Collection, as well as permanent access rights, are included in the same terms as in the previous agreement.

Approximately 400 journals are not part of the agreement. These journals are owned by academic associations, as well as the third-party titles Cell Press and Lancet. Elsevier and the Unit consortium are working to include the journals that are most relevant for Norwegian researchers to publish in.

OUS is currently among the institutions which are not included in the agreement with Elsevier. Unit is in dialogue with the publisher to clarify this. (29.07.2019)

See more information about the agreement at openaccess.no (in Norwegian).

IoP (Institute of physics)

  • The entire APC (article processing charge) cost is covered by the library.
  • Applies to both subscription journals (hybrid) and pure Open Access journals.
  • The corresponding author must be affiliated with UiO or OUS. Corresponding author refers to the author who is responsible for submission of the article and follow-up of the same through the journal’s publication process. Some disciplines use the term first author instead of corresponding author.
  • You will have the opportunity to choose Open Access in the submission process (see IoP's workflow for Open Access)
  • 3-year agreement (2017-2019)
  • The agreement with IoP also includes journals from the American Astronomical Society (AAS) and Biomedical Physics and Engineering Express (BPEX). See list of journal titles.

MDPI

  • Corresponding author must be affiliated with UiO
  • UiO affiliation is determined by an IP address check. The author must be logged on to a UiO machine when the article is submitted

Springer Nature

On behalf of the UiO and other research institutions, Unit has, after a long negotiation process, entered into an agreement in principle with the academic publisher Springer Nature on a Springer Compact agreement. The agreement is for 3 years, starting in 2020. More information will come as soon as the details are in place. Read more in UBs news story.

In 2019, authors continue to publish as usual in Springer Nature's journals.

Wiley

The "Read and Publish Agreement" was signed in March 2019 and is the first agreement of its kind in Norway. The agreement is an important step towards the modernization and conversion of models for publishing research results. In addition to reading access, the agreement also covers APC (article processing charge) for UiO's authors who publish in journals with Wiley.

  • The APC cost is covered in its entirety by UiO. Open publication does not entail extra costs for the researcher / research group.
  • The corresponding author must be affiliated with UiO or OUS. Corresponding author refers to the author who is responsible for submission of the article and follow-up of the same through the journal’s publication process. Some disciplines use the term first author instead of corresponding author.

  • It is important to register correct UiO or OUS affiliation as early as possible in the process.

  • Applies to the publication of peer-reviewed research articles in both subscription journals (hybrid) and pure Open Access journals. See an overview of all Wiley's titles for Open Access publishing.
  • Open publishing is selected after the article is accepted. This is done through the author's Author Services account at Wiley. Link to video about Wiley's author journey (external website).
  • Articles are published with a CC-BY license where the author retains the rights.
  • 3-year agreement (2019-2021), starting on May 1st, 2019. The agreement is valid for articles accepted after May 1st. More information about the agreement at Wiley's webpages.

Agreements and negotiations

«Institutions and consortia that negotiate agreements with publishers shall ensure that these
agreements promote open access without increasing total costs, and that the terms and conditions are open and transparent.» is one of the measures described in the National goals and guidelines for open access to research articles. In accordance with this, UiO negotiates agreements that will contribute to meeting the goals by making it attractive for researchers at UiO to publish their research results openly.
