If a publisher is not mentioned, there is no agreement.

Some disciplines use the term first author instead of corresponding author.

  • The agreement covers articles submitted in 2019 and 2020.

  • It is important to register correct UiO or OUS affiliation as early as possible in the process. See presentation about Elsevier's author journey. (PDF)

  • Some hundred journals are not part of the agreement. These journals are owned by academic associations, as well as the third-party titles Cell Press and Lancet. Elsevier and the Unit consortium are working to include the journals that are most relevant for Norwegian researchers to publish in.

The "Read & publish agreement", which was signed in April 2019, is referred to as a pilot agreement, and Norway is the first country to negotiate such an agreement with Elsevier. The agreement allows for approx. 90% of all articles published in Elsevier journals by authors at Norwegian institutions to be openly available.

Agreements and negotiations

«Institutions and consortia that negotiate agreements with publishers shall ensure that these
agreements promote open access without increasing total costs, and that the terms and conditions are open and transparent.» is one of the measures described in the National goals and guidelines for open access to research articles. In accordance with this, UiO negotiates agreements that will contribute to meeting the goals by making it attractive for researchers at UiO to publish their research results openly.

Unit negotiates and administers agreements with academic publishers on behalf of institutions from the university, department and health sector. The agreements are organized in consortium as payment services. UiO is a participant in the BOTT collaboration, which, in addition to UiO, consists of the universities in Bergen, Tromsø and Trondheim.

Unit has negotiated agreements with major publishers such as Wiley, Elsevier, Springer Nature and Taylor & Francis. The agreements are all "publish and read agreements". Such agreements are an important step towards modernizing and restructuring models for publishing research results. In addition to read access, the agreements also cover APC (article processing charge) for UiO's authors who will publish in journals with the relevant publisher.

The agreement with Wiley was signed in March 2019 and was the first "publish and read"-agreement of its kind in Norway. The agreement with Elsevier came into place in April 2019, then Taylor & Francis, and Springer Nature in November same year.
