Publishing deals and discounts

UiO has entered into agreements for Open Access publishing with several publishers. Some of the agreements offer discounts on APC (article processing charges), while other deals cover the whole APC. If a publisher is not mentioned, there is no agreement.

In the list below you will find information about what applies to each publisher. See also instructions on how to find journals that are included in one of the agreements.

ACS - American Chemical Society

"Publish and read"-agreement negotiated by Unit.

Scope

3-year agreement (2020-2022), starting on January 1st. The agreement is valid for articles accepted after January 1st 2020. Only UiO is covered by the agreement.

The agreement has a quota for the number of open articles that can be published per year. For 2021, articles beyond the quota will be covered. Normal workflow applies. Expenses beyond APC, such as extra pages, colour illustrations and copy editing, must be covered by the author/department.

Who

The corresponding author must be affiliated with UiO. Corresponding author refers to the author who is responsible for submission of the article to the journal. Thus, it is not sufficient to be listed as the corresponding author in the article. Some disciplines use the term first author instead of corresponding author.

For the agreement to apply, it is important that you choose UiO as your affiliation when you submit the article. It is not enough that this is listed in the article, as it is the affiliation chosen in the publisher's workflow that activates the agreement.

What The APC cost is covered in its entirety by UiO. Open publishing does not entail extra costs for the researcher / research group. (APC=article processing charge).
Licenses Articles are published with a CC license where the author retains the rights.
Journals Both subscription journals (hybrid) and pure Open Access journals are included.
Exception -
Information American Chemical Society has created a workflow guide for authors.
Reading access Students and employees are  guaranteed reading rights to research articles.

BioMed Central and SpringerOpen

UiO has paid for membership with BioMed Central. The membership also includes journals in SpringerOpen. This membership must not be confused with the agreement that UiO has with Springer Compact.

  • 15% discount on the APC (article processing charge) (see submission guidelines). APC after discount must be covered with own funds.
  • Corresponding author must be affiliated with UiO. OUS is not included in the membership.
  • UiO affiliation is determined by an IP address check. The author must be logged on to a UiO machine when the article is submitted. Use of UiO-email address will also work. If this is not met, it will be difficult for the publisher to check the affiliation.

Agreements and negotiations

«Institutions and consortia that negotiate agreements with publishers shall ensure that these agreements promote open access without increasing total costs, and that the terms and conditions are open and transparent.» is one of the measures described in the National goals and guidelines for open access to research articles. In accordance with this, UiO negotiates agreements that will contribute to meeting the goals by making it attractive for researchers at UiO to publish their research results openly.

Unit has negotiated agreements with major publishers such as Wiley, Elsevier, Springer Nature and Taylor & Francis (see all agreements). The agreements are all "publish and read agreements". Such agreements are an important step towards modernizing and restructuring models for publishing research results. In addition to read access, the agreements also cover APC (article processing charge) for UiO's authors who will publish in journals with the relevant publisher.

The agreement with Wiley was signed in March 2019 and was the first "publish and read"-agreement of its kind in Norway. The agreement with Elsevier came into place in April 2019, then Taylor & Francis, and Springer Nature in November same year.

Unit negotiates and administers agreements with academic publishers on behalf of institutions from the university, department and health sector. The agreements are organized in consortium as payment services. UiO is a participant in the BOTT collaboration, which, in addition to UiO, consists of the universities in Bergen, Tromsø and Trondheim.
