Are you interested in academic insight beyond the curriculum? Are you curious about the research being conducted at the faculty? “Rett til kaffen” gives students a glimpse into the faculty’s research, presented by the researchers themselves. This week, Giulia Petrachi presents her research on sustainability and food waste prevention.
About the project
Across Europe, vast amounts of edible food are lost every day - wasting precious land, water, and energy, while adding unnecessary strain on the climate. Shaping A European Food Waste Prevention Law is a pioneering PhD research project that tackles this challenge head-on by examining the legal tools and policy incentives that can meaningfully reduce food waste at the corporate level.
Driven by a commitment to sustainability and evidence-based policymaking, the project investigates how existing EU and national guidelines function in practice, and identifies which initiatives truly conduct businesses to prevent waste and redirect surplus food toward secondary uses. By combining legal analysis with real-world insights, the research aims to support legislators and industry actors in co‑creating smarter, more effective frameworks for a circular food economy.
Funded through the Horizon Europe ToNoWaste project, this work contributes to a broader European effort to transform food systems—shifting from linear consumption models to resilient, resource-efficient cycles. The project ultimately seeks to inform policies that not only reduce environmental impact but also strengthen economic and social sustainability across the food supply chain.
Join us at the library for a talk by Doctoral Research Fellow Giulia Petrachi (Department of Private Law), who will share valuable insights from her ongoing research.
