Who we are

NoBAS (Nordic and Baltic association for Asian Studies) is a Nordic Baltic network working to provide East Asian language e-resources to the research community in the region.  After the closure of NIAS (Nordic Institute of Asian Studies) in 2023, and with it shared access to e-resources, libraries in Nordic and Baltic research institutions established NoBAS in order to continue the collaboration on common access to e-resources within Asian studies.

We are working closely with Berlin State Library, and in 2024 provide the member institutions with the following resources: 
 

Chinese databases:

  • China Academic Journals - Ps. We only have 3 concurrent users to this database, so please remember to close the tab when finishing your session. China Academic Journals is a large and continuously updated Chinese journal database which focuses on academy, technology, policy guidance, popular science and education journals and covers science, engineering technology, agriculture, philosophy, medicine, humanities and social sciences, etc. NoBAS has access to these sections:
    F: Literature/History/Philosophy; G: Politics/Military/Law; H: Education/Social Science; I: Electronics/Information Technology; J: Economics and Management.
  • China Core Newspapers Database - Continuously updated full-text database newspapers from the People's Republic of China. Includes more than 650 important newspapers, including Chinese Communist Party newspapers at and above the prefecture level, including /People’s Daily/, /Guangming Daily/, and /Beijing Daily/ as well as industry and other types of newspapers. Content is text only (not page image) and goes back to 2000 in most cases.
  • ChinaLawInfo The database contains 146.000 documents from 1949 onwards. Covered are state and local laws and regulations.
  • People's Daily - With publication started in June 1946 and a current circulation of 3 million, People's Daily is the most influential and authoritative newspaper in China. It is the official voice of the central government of the People's Republic of China for the last 71 years, the People's Daily has published daily issues that provide the single location where the central government and the Communist Party of China announce their respective policies and disseminate governmental, political, and economic messages to the public and the world. Most importantly, since its inception the newspaper has been the true barometer of the political climate of Chinese society on a daily basis. Database Features: People's Daily – Renmin Ribao archive and TODAY's issue are made available online covering from 1946 to present; Fully Internet Version -- no need to install, manage a server; Fully searchable -- either in single or combined search; Fully downloadable and printable; Interchangeable between text files and JPG image files; DAILY update
  • Chinamaxx Access to 700.000 Chinese EBooks of different subjects and from different periods (1900-2009). Books are provided in an online reader format (often providing a table of contents to jump to a certain chapter, allows searches within the book and copy-paste of text passages using the "OCR" tool implemented). PDF download is no longer available.(Members wanting to buy individual e-books in Chinamaxx, should write an email to NoBAS with the title of the book. NoBAS will then purchase the book for you, and you'll be notified when the book is available)
  • Airiti  is an on-line database offering the largest collection of full-text Taiwanese periodicals around the world. Currently TEPS contains articles of more than 900 Taiwanese periodicals of different subjects. The quantity is continually increasing.
  • National Social Sciences Database  (NSSD) provides access to open access articles from major journals published by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and it’s provincial subsidiaries. The database, maintained by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) includes over 2000 titles of core academic journals in social science (and humanities) published in China, including the entire volumes of journals such as文物 Wen wu),考古 (Kao gu),and 历史研究 (Historical Research).

 

Japanese databases:

  • Yomidasu. Yomiuri Database Service 
    Contents of Yomiuri Database Service “Yomidas”: You can search and view over 15 million articles, from the first issue in 1874 to the present, which can be searched all at once (without being aware of Japanese) by eras. Meiji, Taishō and Shōwa Eras (1874-1989): Contains images of the newspaper page, with searchable keywords on individual articles. Regional Sections (Shōwa Era, 1933-2001): A total of 2.76 million pages of articles from across the country are available. Heisei and Reiwa Eras (from 1986 onward): Articles since September 1986 are available in a full-text format, with 250,000 articles added each year. Search Print Edition: The entire one-page images of the newspaper after January 1,2023 are available for search. You can search by page name, publication date, and regions. Images are also linked form articles of the Yomiuri Shimbun. The Japan News: The Japan News is The Yomiuri Shimbunʼs English-language daily. Many stories in this section link to their Japanese originals in the Heisei & Reiwa Eras section, a feature that can help students of the Japanese language. Also contained are the following features: Contemporary Who's Who, Yomiuri Shimbun Mini Definitions, glossary and reference, chronological search (from the Meiji, Taishō and Shōwa eras), saved articles, saved searches.   • Asahi Shimbun Cross-Search
    Asahi Shimbun Cross-Search for Library is an online article database that permits easy investigation of past events, and is available in many universities and libraries both in and outside Japan. It is the largest newspaper article database in Japan, permitting searches of 16 million articles and advertisements from more than 140 years of the newspaper, from its first edition in 1879 (Meiji 12) to today. Most of the articles that can be searched using keywords in the Asahi Shimbun Reduced-size Facsimile Edition are from the newspaper editions published in Tokyo, but pages from the editions published in Osaka are also stored, so it is possible to compare the two editions with different content by searching on publication date. Articles since 1985 are available for full-text searching, and can be read with the full-text displayed. The database also contains articles from the magazines 'AERA' and 'Shukan Asahi'. Furthermore, the Historical Photo Archive, a database of approximately 10 thousand photographic records mostly taken in Asia during the World War II period, is available as well. English-language News Database, Asahi Graph, Who's Who database, Image Database of Regional pages, Overseas Editions and Contemporary Words Chiezo are also available.   • Japan Times Archives
    The Japan Times Archives Online Edition is an internet based online newspaper article service created and provided by The Japan Times Ltd. It covers the entire publication period starting 22 March 1897 up until 31 December of the year before last year. Last years articles can be found in the archive of "The Japan Times Online" website and are moved into "The Japan Times Archives" all together usually once a year. The database consists of scans of the original newspaper pages, which have been OCR-processed. The full-text-search is based on the OCR results. Entire pages or self-chosen cuttings of articles can be printed.
  • Japan Knowledge E-books

    NoBAS has access to these e-book packages from JapanKnowledge:

    - Fûzoku gahô 風俗画報
    The first issue of Fuzoku Gaho was released in 1889 by Toyodo publishing house and it continued to be sold for 27 years until 1916. It was the first graphic magazine produced in Japan, and is also known as a major journal source for the research of customs and social mores.  The magazine contains a total of 518 issues covering content pertaining to social and cultural trends and conditions in the Edo, Meiji and Taisho periods; customs, history, literature, things/objects and affairs, geography (regional and world), war and disasters.

    - Gusho ruijû sei・zoku ・zokuzoku 群書類従 正・続・続々
    The Gunsho Ruiju series is a major collection of manuscripts from ancient times through to the end of the early modern periods compiled under categories covering history, literature, religion, language, customs, art, music, cultivated arts, education, morality, legal codes, politics, economy, society and many other subjects. 3.750 titles in 133 volumes.

Korean databases:

  • NK News & NK Pro
     NK News is a platform offering research tools and analysis on North Korea's current affairs, including English news articles and data, as well as access to websites like NK Pro and KCNA Watch

  • DBpia (Nurimedia)
    DBpia is a full text database that covers the fields of the humanities,social science, natural science, engineering, medical science, art &sports, etc. in Korean language. With its more than 1.900 journals, 2.000.000 articles, and 5.000 e-books DBpia is an easily accessible resource for Korean Studies.
  • KRpia (Nurimedia)
    KRPia is a full text Korean database that focuses on e-books on history, literature, art,culture, philosophy, etc. It although provides access to translations of Korean classics, materials on traditional medicine etc. KRpia is a name of our synthesized knowledge contents service that offers 266,371 theme indexes for 148 sorts of contents covering 10 categories, and as of April 2009 it is in continual expansion. Currently, we are offering various contents services including terminology dictionaries, historical records, biographical dictionaries, classical materials for Korean studies, professional research articles, original texts of literary works, multimedia resources of Korean culture and fine arts. In the knowledge & information society, Nurimedia has digitalized, built up into databases, and supplied the Koreanological contents, including the statute books, encyclopedia, classic works and authentic history such as Koryosa (ancient Korea History), Tripitaka Koreana, Samguk-Sagi/Samguk-Yusa (Histories of the Three Kingdoms), Balhaesa (History of Balhae Kingdom), Mokminsimseo, DaejeonHoitong, Jeungbomunheonbigo.
  • KISS (KSI)
    The database contains 6.000 South Korean academic journals with more than 1 Mio. articles from a wide range of disciplines in searchable full-text. Field covered are Cultural sciences, Language & Literature, Education, Sociology, Business economics, Law & Politics, Nature science, Technology, Medical & Nursing, Agriculture science, Art & physical culture. The database is also accessible via the E-Korean studies portal.

Asian special collections in the Nordics

This is an assemblage of information on physical or digital special collections at libraries in the Nordic Countries affiliated with NoBAS.
Under each country, you can find a description of the collection and, if available, direct links to various materials such as catalogs, manuscripts, and image collections as well as contact information for the individual libraries holding the collections.
 

NIASNytt. Asia Insights

NIAS published a newsletter with news from NIAS and the Nordic region and academic articles for many years and under different titles. From 2004-2009 it was available online under the title NIASNytt/Asia Insights. These issues can be found here
