Digitisation Services

Both smaller and larger projects are accepted in the digitisation workshop, which can handle many different formats and types of material. Do you have images, texts or other analogue sources you wish to digitise and make available? This page tells you how to proceed.

The most important target audience for this service is the research community at UiO. The aim is to digitise and make available archives, collections and single objects of value to the university’s professional environment as well as the general public. The digitised material is made available through the digital heritage platform Alvin, and printed books will also be available through Oria. The University Library contributes with expertise within processing archives, registration, digitisation and migration.

What can you have digitised?

Examples of reasons for getting something digitised can be that the material:

  • does not already exist digitally, or the digital version is of low quality and needs to be digitised anew
  • is unique; the material does not exist in other libraries, archives or museums. An item or a collection can also be deemed unique because of its provenance or affiliation to a collection.
  • is in a fragile state and must be protected from unnecessary wear and tear
  • constitutes/is included in databases in need of visualisation for accessibility
  • constitutes/is included in databases on inaccessible/outdated platforms or software

It is also a criterion that the material is not protected by copyright or data protection legislation, for it to be openly accessible on our platforms.

Digitising individual items

When you order digital files you are contributing to making scientific cultural heritage open and accessible through our platforms Oria and Alvin.
