Where is the 3D printer?
The 3D printer is located at the Science Library in Vilhelm Bjerknes’hus. The printer is called “Trude” and is an Ultimaker S5.
Who can use the 3D printer?
- All UiO students and staff can use the printer
- It can only be used for non-commercial projects
- You must complete a short training session before using it for the first time
How to book the printer
- Book the printer in TP
- You book it for a full day during the library’s staffed opening hours
- If you need more than one day, contact us and we will try to help
- There is a buffer of 3 days from current date and when you can book the printer.
You can see when the printer is available in TP.
If you are not going to use your booking after all, please cancel it in TP so that someone else can use the time.
To enter the room where the printer is, you borrow a key at the library desk. Bring a valid UiO access card, and an ID card to leave as a deposit.
How to use the printer
The printer is an Ultimaker S5 with dual extruder. It can:
- print in PLA (plastic) and PVA (water-soluble support material)
- print with two different PLA colours in the same model
PLA and PVA in different colours are available in the printer room and are free to use.
You may only use the materials that are provided in the room, unless you have agreed something else with us in advance.
Files and software
- Bring a USB stick with the file you want to print
- Prepare (slice) your model in Cura before you save it to the USB stick
- You can download Cura from UiO’s Software Center
- We can give you simple guidance in how to use Cura
File types that work well for 3D printing include for example: `.stl`, `.obj` and `.amf`.
Colours and your own material
If you want a specific colour, ask us which colours we currently have. If you want to use your own material:
- this must be approved by us in advance
- let us know when you book the printer
Take care of the equipment
- Do not unplug, move or remove any equipment
- Handle everything carefully so it is ready for the next user
- If something goes wrong or the printer does not work as expected, contact us so we can help
Food and drink
Please be careful with food and drink in the room. Keeping the area clean helps the equipment last longer.
Need help or found a technical problem?
- If you need technical guidance, contact us well before your booking
- If there is a technical fault with the equipment, report it to the developer group at the library: utviklere @ ub.uio.no
