Library of Things

Do you need a drill, a jigsaw or a backpack? Instead of buying yourself, you can borrow it from the library!

What is the Library of Things?

The Library of Things is a collection of tools, hiking equipment and sports equipment. Things you need occasionally, but not often enough to buy it yourself. So instead of each person buying their own, many people can now share the tools and equipment in the Library of Things. You can find the collection on Level 1 of the HumSam Library in Georg Sverdrup's hus, by the Academic Writing Centre.

Who can borrow?

Only students and staff at UiO can use the Library of Things.

What can you borrow?

In the collection you can find practical tools such as a drill, a grinding machine and a circular saw, hiking equipment such as a hammock, back pack and sleeping mat, as well as some sports equipment for eg table tennis and croquet.

A complete list of what you can borrow can be found in Oria, but feel free to come by and check for yourself what is available at any given time!

How to borrow

  • In Oria you get a complete list of the collection and whether it is on loan or not, but you cannot order or reserve.
  • Borrow the equipment at the counter or in the self service lending machine. Returns must be made to the counter in GSH.
  • The loan period is 7 days. You cannot extend the loan period.
  • Read more about the loan conditions at Everything you need to know about borrowing

Can the Library provide any help or service?

The Library of Things is a self-service collection, and the library cannot give guidance in how to use the equipment. There are instructions for use in the boxes or you can search for instructions yourself online. We also do not assist with repairs in the library, that will be done elsewhere.

In order for the Library of Things to work as well as possible, it is necessary that everyone takes responsibility for treating the equipment with care, and for returning it in good condition.

Remember that all use is at your own risk.

Suggest a purchase

Do you have a suggestion for a new purchase to the Library of Things? Write your suggestion on the list placed on one of the shelves in the Library of Things, and see what others have suggested. The list will be revised once every semester.

UiO's climate and environmental strategy

One of the main goals in UiO's climate and environmental strategy states this:

Climate and green campus: reduce the university’s climate footprint and develop ‘green campuses’.

The establishment of the Library of Things is thus a step on the way towards a greener university.
